چکیده

We present recent progress in searching for galaxies at redshift from z ≃ 5 to z ≃ 10. Wide-field and senstive surveys with 8m class telescopes have been providing more than several hundreds of star forming galaxies at z ≃ 5 – 7 that are probed in the optical window. These galaxies are used to study the early cosmic star formation activity as well as the early structure formation in the universe. Moreover, near infrared deep imaging and spectropscopic surveys have found probable candidates of galaxies from z ≃ 7 to z ≃ 10. Although these candidates are too faint to be identified unambiguously, we human being are now going to the universe beyond 13 billion light years, close to the epoch of first-generations stars; i.e., Population III stars. We also mention about challanges to find Population III-dominated galaxies in the early universe.

The Size-star Formation Relation of Massive Galaxies

We study the relation between size and star formation activity in a complete sample of 225 massive (M∗ > 5 · 10 M⊙) galaxies at 1.5 < z < 2.5, selected from the FIREWORKS UV-IR catalog of the CDFS. Based on stellar population synthesis model fits to the observed restframe UV-NIR SEDs, and independent MIPS 24μm observations, 65% of galaxies are actively forming stars, while 35% are quiescent. Us...

The Evolution of the Star Formation Activity in Galaxies and Its Dependence on Environment

We study how the proportion of star-forming galaxies evolves between z = 0.8 and z = 0 as a function of galaxy environment, using the [OII] line in emission as a signature of ongoing star formation. Our high-z dataset comprises 16 clusters, 10 groups and another 250 galaxies in poorer groups and the field at z = 0.4 − 0.8 from the ESO Distant Cluster Survey, plus another 9 massive clusters at s...

Hst and Spitzer Imaging of Red and Blue Galaxies at Z ∼ 2.5: a Correlation between Size and Star Formation Activity from Compact Quiescent Galaxies to Extended Star Forming Galaxies

We present HST NICMOS+ACS and Spitzer IRAC+MIPS observations of 41 galaxies at 2 < z < 3.5 in the FIRES MS1054 field with red and blue rest-frame optical colors. About half of the galaxies are very compact (effective radii re < 1 kpc) at rest-frame optical wavelengths, the others are extended (1 < re < 10 kpc). For reference, 1 kpc corresponds to 0. 12 at z = 2.5 in the adopted cosmology. We se...

Star Formation and Structure Formation at 1 ∼ < Z ∼ < 4

The advent of 8m-class telescopes has made galaxies at 1 ∼ < z ∼ < 4 relatively easy to detect and study. This is a brief and incomplete review of some of the recent results to emerge from surveys at these red-shifts. After describing different strategies for finding galaxies at z ∼ > 1, and the differences (and similarities) in the resulting galaxy samples, I summarize what is known about the ...

Keck Deep Fields . I . Observations , Reductions , and the Selection of Faint Star - Forming Galaxies at Redshifts

We introduce a very deep, Rlim∼27, multicolor imaging survey of very faint star-forming galaxies at z∼4, z∼3, z∼2.2, and z∼1.7. This survey, carried out on the Keck I telescope, uses the very same UnGRI filter system that is employed by the Steidel team to select galaxies at these redshifts, and thus allows us to construct identically-selected, but much fainter, samples. However, our survey rea...
